The original concept of the Doulton water filter was developed by Sir Henry Doulton in 1854 when he introduced a gravity earthenware filter to strain out bacteria from the river Thames which, at that time, was used to supply drinking water. Thames river water was heavily contaminated with Cholera and Typhoid; and these diseases had reached epidemic proportions.

Doulton® and British Berkefeld® filters are capable of removing more than 99.99% of the chlorine resistant cysts such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium.
Long Life/Value for Money:
The ceramic water filter shell of Doulton® and British Berkefeld® may be cleaned in order to prolong the life of the product. Sediment and fine particles that can clog other filters can be scrubbed off when the filtered water flow slows down. When other filters would need to be replaced, the ceramic water filter shell protects the carbon block media from early failure. The Doulton® UltraCarb water filter candle will remain effective for 6 months/600 gallons before it will need to be replaced.
Doulton ceramic water filters contain a proprietary system to inhibit microbiological growth, meaning that there is no need to sterilize Doulton® or British Berkefeld® ceramic filters. This is very important once Chlorine has been removed from the water and after a water filter has been exposed to brown water or microbiologically contaminated water.
